How we check our facts

What we check before anything goes up, and how we keep it current.

Every fact about a company on this site comes from one of three places: the company’s own website and pricing page, an outside security certification (SOC 2, ISO 27001 and similar), or our own facts file, which every page on this site reads from. We have not run a hands-on trial of every one of these tools, so we will not tell you we timed something or ran a live test we did not actually run. Where a real test would matter to you, we turn it into a checklist you can run yourself instead of a claim about what we did.

Before anything goes live

  • We check every fact about a company (price, certifications, feature list) against the company’s current website.
  • We check every legal or regulatory statement in a guide against the original source, and note the date we checked it.
  • We check that every link on the page actually goes somewhere; nothing links to a page that is not live yet.
  • We check the writing against our own style rules: no made-up testing claims, no borrowed star ratings from other review sites, and prices marked as estimates where a company has not posted a fixed number.

After it goes live

We recheck facts and scores from time to time. If something changes, a price, a dropped certification, a feature added or removed, we update every page that mentions it, and the date at the bottom of the page moves. If our opinion about which company fits which kind of deal changes, we say so on the page; we do not quietly rewrite it.

If you spot a fact that looks wrong, send it to us.
